ALIEN UNDEAD is an AKA for THE DARK LURKING (Australia - 2010).

BATTLE COMMAND is an AKA for LA BATTAGLIA D'INGHILTERRA (It/Fr/Sp - 1969).

THE CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN and LES EXPÉRIENCES ÉROTIQUES DE FRANKENSTEIN are AKA's for the Spanish/French co-production LA MALDICION DE FRANKENSTEIN (1972). A note has now been added to this entry which reads: "The French release print, Les Expériences Érotiques de Frankenstein, contains alternate 'nudie' footage and is slightly shorter than its Spanish counterpart. The French version was released in English-speaking territories as The Erotic Rites of Frankenstein, while the Spanish edition was known in the same territories as The Curse of Frankenstein."

THE JACKY CHAN CONNECTION is an AKA for SHAOLIN WOODEN MEN (HK - 1976). The spelling might seem a bit 'iffy', but it's all there on the US one-sheet, courtesy of emovieposter.com.

Updates (25 Feb 2012)

The following updates and corrections relate to entries in the main widescreen filmography. Sincere gratitude to the various correspondents who provided invaluable info:

THE ADVENTURES OF TAKLA MAKAN is an AKA for ADVENTURE IN KIGAN CASTLE (Jpn - 1966).

THE BRUCE LEE CONNECTION is an AKA for DUEL UNDER THE BURNING SUN (Tai - 1979).

Movie tech-historian Dan Sherlock contacted me to point out a factual error in the note I supplied with the entry for CAROUSEL (USA - 1956). Originally I claimed the film was shot in both 35mm and 55mm, but this is not strictly true. I've amended the note accompanying this entry, which now reads: "Began shooting in 35mm alongside its 55mm counterpart (famously prompting the departure of original star Frank Sinatra, who grew tired of having to do everything twice!), but the 35mm option was dropped after several weeks, and production continued in 55mm. However, for technical reasons, only the 35mm version made it into release. The road-show presentation featured 6-track stereo sound, as originally intended".

Mark Galloway has provided evidence (namely, a DVD frame-grab) that indicates CITY HERO (HK - 1985) was framed and released at 1.85:1. So, this title has now been dropped from the 'Unconfirmed' section, and out of the filmog altogether.

Correspondent Gary Couzens casts serious doubt on the inclusion of DARK AGE (Australia - 1987). The film has been listed in many sources over the years as having been shot in anamorphic Panavision, but Gary's online review of a recent Australian DVD edition (framed at 1.78:1) links to a trailer on YouTube which clearly demonstrates the use of spherical lenses during principal photography. However, as Gary's review also makes clear, the film could have been shot in Super 35 and released theatrically with a 2.39:1 ratio, before making its way to DVD in a cropped/reframed edition. Without access to a theatrical print, I've opted to place this title in the 'Unconfirmed' section.

DRAGON'S INFERNO is an AKA for EIGHTEEN WOMEN FIGHTERS OF MURIM (S.Korea - 1979).

FLYING MASTERS OF KUNG FU is an AKA for REVENGEFUL SWORDSWOMAN (Tai - 1979).

HAN BO WARRIOR is an AKA for RAGE OF THE WIND (HK - 1973).

NEW YORK NINJA is an AKA for IN THE CLAWS OF THE CIA (HK - 1981).

According to this posting at the fantastic Temple of Schlock blog, ONKEL TOMS HÜTTE (WG/Fr/It/Yug - 1965) - released in English-speaking territories as UNCLE TOM'S CABIN - was re-released in the US in 1975 (for one week only!) under the title CASSY. Two years later, distributor Sam Sherman hired director Al Adamson to shoot new, 'racier' material for another re-release under the original Cabin title, bumping the PG rating up to an R. This version was later reissued as WHITE TRASH WOMAN, which joins CASSY as an AKA for this particular entry.

The film currently listed as THE POSSESSION OF DAVID O'REILLY has since been released in its native UK as THE TORMENT, which now becomes the primary title (David O'Reilly becomes an AKA). The copyright year has also been changed from 2010 to 2009.

SNUFF BOX CONNECTION is an AKA for SNUFF BOTTLE CONNECTION (HK - 1977).

Thanks to info supplied by Dan Sherlock, I've added a note to the entry for the IMAX film TITANICA (Can/USA - 1992) which reads: "Two versions of this film went into release - a 40 minute presentation for 'regular' venues, and a 95 minute version (with intermission)".

Notes 'n' stuff

I updated the 21 Feb post, adding links to various sources for some of the updates and corrections I've noted over the last couple of days. This is something I'll do regularly from now on, so others can verify for themselves the trail I've followed.

Also, it goes without saying that the updates found here can be incorporated into the main filmography by anyone who chooses to download the Rich Text documents onto their own computer. However, if you cut and paste individual entries directly from this blog, you'll end up with text in a different font to those around them. If you're OK with that, fair enough, but for those who prefer consistency... well, the solution may seem a bit fiddly, but it's worth it in the end.

For a start, I'd advise manually typing each new or updated entry into the primary list, which will ensure conformity throughout the document. This might seem daunting at first, but there aren't that many updates.

However, adding those all-important non-Roman characters to a Rich Text document represents the aforementioned 'fiddly' bit. If you cut and paste Japanese/Chinese/Russian/etc. text directly from this blog, it will appear in your downloaded document in an over-large font that will spoil the overall layout (try it with 十大殺手, for example, and you'll see what I mean).

My solution is to manually type the relevant entries directly into the Rich Text document, but without the non-Roman characters. Cut and paste the non-Roman text from the entries in this blog into Google Translate, and then cut and paste from there directly into the RT document. Et voilà! The characters may be in a different font, but they are now re-sized and conform to the same proportions of the surrounding text. At least, that's how it works for me. Try it out for size, and good luck!

The on-screen title of the 2009 German film SASHA is actually SAŠA, though the movie was promoted under the former title in most territories.

Updates (21 Feb 2012)

IMAGO (USA - 1970): Currently listed as having been shot in an unspecified anamorphic format, a contemporary review in the Houston Chronicle confirms it was actually shot in Techniscope. Image found at the Temple of Schlock blog.

The English title of MAGI I LUFTEN (Den/Swd - 2011) is LOVE IS IN THE AIR.

According to its entry at the British Board of Film Classification, 3-D romp The Pirates! Band of Misfits will now be released as THE PIRATES! IN AN ADVENTURE WITH SCIENTISTS! (2012) in its native UK. However, it will be released in the US under the Misfits title.

'Scope' Cinema: 1922 - Present Day (Introduction)

This blog provides an adjunct to the Widescreen Filmography currently available at the American Widescreen Museum (AWSM) website. URL as follows:

Gary Palmer's Exhaustive Wide Screen List

The listing aims to provide basic info for every feature film produced since 1922 that was shot and released in a 'scope' format, usually 2.35:1 (prior to 1971) or 2.39:1 (1971 onwards), but including everything from 2.00:1 to the widest possible formats available in the commercial arena.

The listings at AWSM will be updated on a regular basis, but this blog aims to bridge the gap between updates by providing all the new and corrected entries which I find on a daily basis. So, instead of waiting for a revision of the online version, readers can find the latest updates right here.

The layout for each entry is virtually identical to the listings at AWSM, so I'd urge newcomers to head over there first, read the Introduction and familiarise themselves with said layout, along with the various abbreviations used here.

Entries which do not list a photographic format were shot 'open frame' (usually 1.37:1 for 35mm and/or 1.78:1 for HD) and framed within that open space for a 2.39:1 release print. This is the same principal as 'flat' films which are framed and cropped for a 1.66:1 or 1.85:1 theatrical print, and has more in common with 'cropscreen' than widescreen, though the results are often indistinguishable from the real thing.
