Updates (spaghetti westerns, Cinerama correction and "Prometheus", etc.)

The film currently listed at the scope filmography as THE BLIND SWORDSMAN'S VENGEANCE turns out to be an AKA for ZATOICHI'S VENGEANCE (1966), which now becomes the film's primary title.

In the same vein, the film currently listed as Indio Black, Sai Che Tico: Sei un Gran Figlio di... should actually be given as INDIO BLACK, SAI CHE TI DICO: SEI UN GRAN FIGLIO DI... (1970). And La Sorella di Satana should be given as IL LAGO DI SATANA (1965).

DOGORA is an AKA for DAGORA THE SPACE MONSTER (1964).

And PROMETHEUS (2012) has been earmarked for release in IMAX format, alongside the 35mm and D-Cinema versions, and this has been duly noted.

Corrections and updates from correspondents (thanks, guys!):

Following my recent posting about the frame-rates of various 3-panel processes, Gary Couzens has written to clarify an important point about CINERAMA'S RUSSIAN ADVENTURE (1965). The original Kinopanorama footage was shot at 25 frames per second, but new footage was shot in Cinerama at that format's standard 26fps and used as wraparound material. As Gary points out, it's highly likely the entire film was printed and exhibited at the Cinerama frame-rate of 26fps, with a corresponding 'speed-up' of sound and picture during the Russian documentary footage.

Gary also confirms that the sound format for SAMSARA (2011) is Dolby Digital 7.1, and that SILVER CITY (1984) was directed by Sophia Turkiewicz, not Sophie Turkiewicz as currently listed.

I tripped over my own enthusiasm (!) in the posting for 14 May 2012. S. Martin has written to clarify that THE GHASTLY LOVE OF JOHNNY X began production in 2006 but wasn't completed and/or released until 2012. Also, in the very same posting, I listed Michael Mann as the director of PAIN AND GAIN (2013), when it should have been Michael Bay. Big difference, I'm sure you'll agree.

Also, S. Martin points out that THE TELEGRAM MAN (2012, listed as a new entry in the other posting for 14 May 2012) is actually a short film, and it has now been dropped from the filmography. The blog entry has also been amended. He also reports that the 35mm section of MA PART DU GÂTEAU (2011) was filmed in Hawk Scope.

The relevant entries now run as follows:

New entries ("Skyfall", Keanu's directorial debut, and a new 65mm movie!)

Thanks again to S. Martin for his contribution to this list of new entries for the scope filmography:

The entry for GOAT ISLAND remains incomplete, since the review in Variety claims the film is in 'Panavision widescreen', but this could mean either anamorphic, spheri-crop or even HD origination, and I haven't found any online footage to confirm things one way or the other.

No 70mm bookings have yet been confirmed for the 65mm-lensed THE MASTER, not even for IMAX release, which you'd think would be a no-brainer from the outset.

And the 'scope' status of MEKONG HOTEL remains unconfirmed, since I could find no online footage to verify the 'widescreen' claim in a recent Variety review.

Updates (Panavision confusion, and tiny "Vampire" details, etc.)

The film currently listed at the scope filmography as FEARLESS FIGHTERS was actually released in its native Taiwan as HERO OF HEROES (1971). The version titled FEARLESS FIGHTERS was released in the US two years later, though not before it had suffered the indignity of being redubbed and re-scored.

Correspondent S. Martin cites an article in 'American Cinematographer' magazine which reveals that THE GHASTLY LOVE OF JOHNNY X (2012) began production with Hawk anamorphic lenses before switching to Panavision lenses following an enforced break in the shooting schedule.

S. Martin has also clarified some confusion over the equipment and lenses employed on a couple of anamorphic productions: THE MASK OF ZORRO (1998) was shot on Arri and Moviecam cameras supplied by Panavision, equipped with J-D-C anamorphic lenses, also supplied by Panavision. However, the on-screen credits simply claim the movie was 'Filmed in Panavision', which is both sloppy and confusing. Apparently, the same thing happened the following year on ENTRAPMENT (1999) - shot by the same DP - also shot on Moviecam and Arri cameras equipped with J-D-C lenses, all supplied by Panavision, with only the latter company mentioned anywhere in the credits (though nothing so bald-faced as a misleading 'Filmed in Panavision').

GOLOK SETAN is an Indonesian-Japanese co-production, not just Indonesian as currently listed. And the copyright date is 1983, not 1984.

The film currently listed as Karzan: Il Favoloso Uomo della Giungla should actually be spelled KARZAN: IL FAVOLOSO UOMO DELLA JUNGLA (1971).

LEGEND OF THE SOLDIER is an AKA for the Spanish film BRUC (2010).

The on-screen copyright date of MAJOR DUNDEE is 1964, not 1965.

Following a viewing of the film on DVD, I've made some small adjustments to the entry for MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - GHOST PROTOCOL (2011) with regards to its use of 35mm and 1570 materials. See the revised entry below.

I've also made some tiny - though crucial! - changed to the Spanish film currently listed as La Orgía Nocturna de los Vampiros, also based on a personal viewing of the film. Though it's standard practice to place an accent on certain letters in written Spanish, the 'i' in Orgia isn't accented on-screen, so the actual title is LA ORGIA NOCTURNA DE LOS VAMPIROS. And the copyright year is 1972, not 1973 as currently listed. The AKA title The Vampire's Night Orgy should be rendered as THE VAMPIRES' NIGHT ORGY. Like I say, tiny details - but the scope filmog is built on a foundation of such things.

The copyright year of PER POCHI DOLLARI ANCORA has been changed from 1967 to 1966, while the copyright year of LA SFIDA DEI GIGANTI has been changed from 1965 to 1964.

The on-screen title of Hercules and the Black Pirates (an AKA for the 1964 film SANSONE CONTRO IL CORSARO NERO) is HERCULES AND THE BLACK PIRATE.

SKY TERROR is an AKA for SKYJACKED (1972).

THE WAR IN SPACE is an AKA for WAR OF THE PLANETS (1977).

These entries now run as follows:

Updates, Cinerama, etc. (9 May 2012)

The vast majority of films in the scope filmography were shot at 24 frames per second, and it's incumbent upon me to mention the few cases when movies are photographed at other frame rates. However, as correspondent Gary Couzens pointed out recently, the various Cinerama documentary features (THIS IS CINERAMA, SEARCH FOR PARADISE, etc.) were actually photographed at 26fps, and should be listed as such. Same goes for WINDJAMMER, the only film shot in the Cinemiracle process (just to confuse matters, the Todd-70 feature SCENT OF MYSTERY was later converted to Cinemiracle and screened under the title HOLIDAY IN SPAIN, running at 24fps!). However, the two narrative Cinerama features - HOW THE WEST WAS WON and THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF THE BROTHERS GRIMM - were both shot at 24fps, presumably to facilitate easy printing of 35mm and 70mm release prints. My thanks to Gary for reminding me of this important point. Further research indicates the Kinopanorama process from Russia ran at 25fps, and this is duly noted.

Though originally screened at festivals under the title SYDNEY, this film - one of Paul Thomas Anderson's earliest works - was eventually given wide release as HARD EIGHT (1996), which now becomes the primary title for this filmography. SYDNEY becomes an AKA.

The AKA for HARLEQUIN (1980) currently listed as Dark Places should actually be DARK FORCES. This mistake has been festering in the filmog since I first began compiling it many moons ago, and it took Gary Couzens' eagle eye to point out my error! My thanks to Gary, and my apologies to everyone else!!

And after yet more prompting from Gary, I checked out online footage from TESTIMONY (1987) and discovered it's an early example of 'spheri-crop' filmmaking, not anamorphic Panavision as currently listed.

Contrary to the mistake I made in the entry for 1 Apr 2012, the film I listed as House at the Edge of the Street is actually titled HOUSE AT THE END OF THE STREET. That entry has now been amended.

The on-screen title of À Tout Coeur a Tokyo pour OSS 117 is actually ATOUT COEUR À TOKYO POUR OSS 117 (1966).

The Thai film currently listed as B.K.O.: Bangkok Knockout is actually given on-screen as BANGKOK KNOCKOUT (2010), and was co-directed by Panna Rittikrai and Morakot Kaewthanee. The Thai title is โคตรสู้ โคตรโส. It was filmed and exhibited at 1.85:1, so has now been dropped from the filmography.

The on-screen title of Black Magic Part II is actually BLACK MAGIC 2 (1976).

HICK (2011) is currently listed as a 'spheri-crop' film, but online trailers reveal it was actually shot with anamorphic lenses (Panavision, according to the IMDb).

The film currently listed as Neighborhood Watch has now been retitled THE WATCH (2012).

New entries 'n' Updates (3 May 2012)

Just a quick heads-up for those of you coming late to the party (and those unwilling - or unable - to wade through the entire Introduction to the scope filmography at AWSM, though I'd urge you to do so anyway): The following new entries were all shot and designed for 'scope' exhibition with a 2.39:1 aspect ratio. I only provide the name of a photographic process (Panavision, Techniscope, etc.) where such a process was employed during principal photography. These days, in most - though not all - cases, films are either shot on 35mm film or HD video at an 'open' ratio where the intended theatrical portion is framed within the DP's viewfinder. It is this portion of the image which is extracted in post-production and projected in your local cattleplex. From now on, I'm going to call this process 'spheri-crop' (ie. films shot with spherical lenses and cropped in post for theatrical exhibition).

Once upon a time, I used to mention whether a film was shot in Super 35 or HD. But the phrase 'Super 35' refers to a film gauge (like 16mm or 65mm), not a specific 'widescreen' format. We don't ascribe trade names to films shot 'open-matte' and designed for 1.85:1 projection, and 'spheri-crop' scope movies employ exactly the same process, albeit for a different projected ratio. In any event, the on-screen results are entirely interchangeable, and most assuredly indistinguishable from one another! In the end, all you need to know is that these films were designed for 'scope' exhibition.

All that said, now on with the show:
